A.J. Ariffin, Yeo & Harpal was founded by a remarkable man, Dato’ Harpal Singh Grewal, whose legacy extends far beyond the courtroom. Born on 9th October 1950 in Kuala Pilah, Negeri Sembilan, to humble beginnings, Harpal faced numerous challenges that shaped his determination and compassion. After completing his law degree at the prestigious National University of Singapore, where he built lifelong friendships and admired Singapore’s growth under Lee Kuan Yew, Harpal returned to Malaysia to care for his ailing father. In 1982, he founded A.J. Ariffin, Yeo & Harpal, a bold move that inspired young lawyers to follow in his footsteps. His vision and courage saw the firm grow into one of Malaysia’s leading legal establishments.
Harpal’s legal career was marked by excellence and innovation. At a time when few Sikh lawyers ventured into conveyancing, he boldly embraced it, while also becoming a force in corporate and commercial litigation. His name is associated with over 250 reported cases, a testament to his profound legal acumen. His commitment to his clients, regardless of public opinion, was unwavering, as seen when he represented former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in 2018. For Harpal, the duty of a lawyer was clear: to serve his clients with integrity and dedication.
Beyond his professional achievements, Harpal was a trailblazer in supporting the legal community. He offered complimentary consultations to young lawyers and established a WhatsApp group for Sikh lawyers, where legal knowledge was freely exchanged, fostering a supportive network for problem-solving. His personal law library, one of the best private collections, was open to anyone seeking wisdom and guidance, reflecting his passion for learning and sharing knowledge.
Harpal’s philanthropy was quiet but impactful. He never sought recognition, but stories of him funding education, purchasing homes and cars for others, and offering generous help to those in need have come to light after his passing. His dedication to pro bono work further cemented his reputation as a lawyer with a heart.
